What's New for the 2018 Kia Sportage?

With the 2018 model year, the Sportage-Kia's compact crossover SUV-is at the midpoint of its fourth production cycle. It is split into three trims: the base-level LX, the mid-tier EX, and the top-of-the-line SX Turbo. Every trim got major changes. The LX has an upgraded stain-resistant cloth seat trim, the EX has additional standard features that include blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, and the SX Turbo gets an electronic parking brake.

Designed as a five-seater, the 2018 Kia Sportage provides a total interior volume of 129.3 cubic feet. Standard cargo room is measured at 30.7 cubic feet. On the EX, Kia adds front-seat heating ability and a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat with 2-way power lumbar support, and exclusive to the SX Turbo are front-seat cooling capability (in addition to heating) and 8-way power adjustability on the front passenger seat. For comfort and convenience, the Sportage starts off with features such as cruise control, Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free phone operation and audio streaming, six-speaker audio, an AM/FM radio tuner, a USB port and auxiliary audio jack for connecting mobile devices, a complimentary SiriusXM® satellite radio subscription, remote keyless entry, and a 5-inch touchscreen. On the EX, there's a 7-inch touchscreen (in place of the 5-inch), Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ for smartphone-based control, a USB 2.1 port for charging your mobile devices, and an upgrade of remote keyless entry to a smart key system with push-button engine start. Unique to the SX Turbo are HD Radio™, an 8-inch touchscreen navigation system with SiriusXM® Traffic, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, the HomeLink® garage-door opener, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, and an eight-speaker 320-watt surround sound system.

Under the hood of the Sportage's LX and EX trims is a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine that produces 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. The aptly-named SX Turbo is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 that provides 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are hooked up to an electronically controlled 6-speed automatic transmission. Although front-wheel drive is standard, you can go with an all-wheel-drive system instead.

2018 Kia Sportage RearFor safety, the 2018 Kia Sportage comes with six airbags, a rearview camera, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, electronic vehicle stability control, electronic brake-force distribution, traction control, hill start assist control, and downhill brake control. Upgrading to the EX adds the aforementioned blind spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert (new for the year), as well as lane change assist. Exclusive to the SX Turbo are an electronic parking brake (also new for this year), autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, and front and rear parking sensors to boost the functionality of the rearview camera.
