Most of us may not think too much about gasoline outside of our trips to the fuel pump and our occasional glances at the gas gauge while we're driving. But as the automotive world moves into the new green car era, it is becoming more and more imperative that we understand the basic substance that helps fuel our cars.
The below film is from the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines circa 1956. It's a fairly charming film - propaganda-esque overtones aside - and it gives a rather in-depth look at the science behind gasoline, all with the help of cute Disney-lite animation. I mean, who knew crude oil could be so cute?
A lot of the manufacturing technology has - obviously - been updated since this film was released, but many of its main concepts still hold true. So if you're in the mood to experience a little blast from the past and learn a little bit about some of basic tenants of automotive science, sit back and take in this little "film reel." You'll be able to impress all your friends with your fascinating knowledge of molecules, crude oil and the odd affectation of 1950s-era narrators.
