Many big brands unveiled brand-new car concepts at this year's 2014 Chicago Auto Show, showcasing unique elements that could be the basis for future models to come. Kia fell in line and debuted their own personal concept they'd been working on known as Niro, an urban-friendly car with plenty of flair that can't be found in many of today's smaller cars on the road. The untraditional concept car is said to be a look into what's to come from Kia down the road when the automaker creates their next B-segment vehicle, and if this stands true, there's no doubt that it will be quite the eye-catcher.
Standing on a large, brawny frame, Niro is draped in a dark exterior color, appropriately named "Nightfall," and sports a stainless-steel roof that gives the car a bit of a futuristic look. Two dramatic front headlamps are perched menacingly on either side of the car and below them sits Kia's signature grille, which is framed by "Limelight" aluminum. This unique lime-green element is carried out sparingly throughout the exterior design and puts a twist on traditional car styling. The car also dons butterfly doors with built-in cameras that swing above the roof for easy entry.
"Ten years ago people wanted understated style in the SUV market, but increasingly, as more people migrate to the B-segment, they are looking for strong character and individuality," said Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer, Kia Design Center Europe. "It may have the looks of a Dakar [Rally] contender, but Niro has a strong premium feel thanks to our innovative use of advanced and modern materials that mix brawn with spirit to deliver a playful vehicle ready to be part of anyone's active lifestyle."
That "premium feel" mentioned is very much carried out within Niro's cabin and improve its entire appeal. The seats are lined with "Orbit Silver" quilted fabric, the dashboard features "Volcano Black" leather and the steering wheel is made up of aluminum and leather. The "Limelight" aluminum is also showcased on the switchgear and an array of technology functions, such as Bluetooth, navigation and push to start, are included. Furthermore, the concept car is fitted with a remarkable turbocharged 1.6L Gamma engine, producing 160 horsepower, a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission and an electric hybrid system, delivering 45 horsepower.
With its out-of-this-world appearance, stunning features and reliable powertrain system, Niro is primed and ready to be Kia's next B-segment vehicle. There's no official word as to whether the brand will put the car into production, but we have high hopes that we'll get to see this beauty make its way to the city streets one day.
