The idea of a 3D-printed car is already a fascinating concept, and come September, many will have the chance to see one built in person, because Local Motors has announced that they will be creating one live, with help from The Association For Manufacturing Technology, at this September's International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago! The company's car of choice will be none other than an electric vehicle and the event will mark the first time a co-created, locally relevant 3D-printed car has been developed.
As one of the most prominent manufacturing technology shows in the country, IMTS is the perfect place for Local Motors to show off their 3D-printing abilities. The company previously built their 3D-printed Rally Fighter at IMTS 2012, which was made possible through the use of material science and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, and they plan to use the same methods when creating their EV in September.
"Local Motors is undeniably the first disruptive entrant into the U.S. automotive industry in decades," said Bonnie Gurney, Director - Communications for AMT. "The innovations they are driving in the design, manufacture and sale of vehicles has been empowering individual innovators since 2007. Partnering with them to deliver safer, more functional, lightweight and efficient vehicles via new, innovative manufacturing technologies is core to our commitment to bring global technology advancements to the local level."
Now, while you can't go out and buy a 3D-printed electric vehicle at this time, you can learn about Kia's all-new 2015 Soul EV, which is expected to go on sale later this year at Camelback Kia.
