Car Sounds and What the Issue Could Be

Routine service and repairs will be needed periodically for any vehicle driven on a regular basis. One of the most common ways that people notice something is wrong with their vehicle is by listening for odd sounds. Below are some common sounds and their most likely causes.

Squeaky Brakes

With all of the stress your brake pads and rotors are under, they will wear down over time. When you press down on your brake pedal to stop your vehicle and hear squeaking in the process, this is a sign that they may be due for service. Replacing your brake pads is a routine repair our certified technicians perform daily. Occasionally, after a brake pad replacement you may hear squeaking noises as well. New pads have metal fibers and are coated with protective elements that can cause this. Normal driving and braking will typically wear these areas down quickly and the noise should disappear. Engine Rattling

A rattling sound coming from your engine can suggest that there is a premature detonation occurring with your ignition. An overheated engine, bad timing of your ignition or bad fuel octane are just some of the possible causes. All of these issues can cause permanent damage to your vehicle, so be sure to schedule a service appointment for a full inspection.

Engine Clicking

Hearing your engine making a clicking sound has a few possibilities. When your vehicle is turned on your fuel injectors quickly open and close to allow fuel to enter the internal combustion chamber. When that happens, a clicking type sound can occur but it's nothing to worry about as it's a part of the normal operation of your engine. However, a ticking, clicking or tapping sound when your vehicle is running can also mean a problem. Issues can include low levels of oil in your engine, bad reciprocating components, rod knock or issues with the valve train. It's always a good idea to have your vehicle checked just in case there is a problem that could cause damage to the engine.

Knocking Under the Hood

Loud engine knocking sounds require immediate service. There could be problems going on with your pistons, valves or connecting rods. If you neglect prompt service, you could have permanent damage occur to your engine.

Engine Squealing

A squealing engine isn't typical for any vehicle. This noise is usually the result of a loose or worn out belt. If you hear this mainly when you accelerate, it's likely the serpentine belt on newer vehicle models or the v-belts on older models. If these break severe engine damage can occur and all the systems powered by these belts will stop working, including the power steering pump, cooling fan and more. This noise can also come from an old or failing alternator. If your vehicle squeals while turning the steering wheel, you may have an issue with the steering system.
